Botox

Wrinkles and facial lines result from ageing, muscle activity (and over-activity) and your genetic predisposition. In addition, excessive sun exposure, alcohol consumption, emotional and hormonal influences and smoking can also increase the likelihood of wrinkles. Whilst you may be able to reduce or control some of the factors, you cannot influence all the factors and that’s why we all develop some wrinkles as we age.

Botulinum Toxin A is the generic name for Botox which is a toxin that relaxes the muscles and then smoothes wrinkles. Every time we smile or frown, we use our underlying facial muscles and by contracting these muscles it creases the skin and gradually the collagen in the skin is worn out and that then leads to lines and wrinkles on the face. As we age they become more apparent and they make us look older. A quick, easy and very predictable way to delay or reverse this process is to relax the muscles and smooth the lines, by injecting Botulinum Toxin A.

How it works

The anti-wrinkle treatment we all know as Botox, is now being performed using different products such as: Vistabel, Dysport, Neurobloc, and Botox. They all contain Botulinum Toxin A and have been tested to be equally effective and safe. The procedure is prescription only and should only be administered by highly trained doctors, dentists or nurses.

The effect normally lasts for up to 3 months. This means it is reversible and so the effect will automatically disappear once the toxin wears off. A micro thin, short needle is used to inject very superficially under the skin into the muscle.

Botulinum Toxin A has been used on over 1 million patients around the world for over 10 years, with very few side-effects or complications. The horror stories seem totally exaggerated and most often botox is blamed for other treatments such has fillers, that have gone wrong. Botox is one of the easiest, least painful and safest treatment in the aesthetic industry.

What does Botox involve?

After an initial consultation, assessing your medical health and which muscles ideally should be treated, we may apply an anaesthetic cream and then a number of micro injections are performed. The procedure should last no more than 15 minutes.

Will I experience any side-effects?

Discomfort is extremely minimal and very brief. There may be minor redness or swelling at the injection site, which subsides within minutes. You will be able to go home and return to your daily activities immediately after your treatment is completed. Very occasionally there may be a minor localised bruising that will last a few days. It can usually be covered with makeup.

Will Botox work for me?

The treatment can take up to 2 weeks to take full effect but mostly it will start working after a couple of days. A minor top-up or adjustment may be desired. The treatment lasts 3-4 months at which point a new procedure can be performed. Some patients may experience less effect or that it lasts shorter depending on the individual metabolism. Smoking and regular exercise can affect the durability.

Adverse Effects

In a small number of cases there may be some localised bruising, slight swelling or redness at the site of injection. This usually disappears very quickly and can respond to the application of a cool pack in the area. A temporary drooping eyelid has also occurred in some patients. Botox has been used in millions of patients over the last 15 years. It is made in a laboratory environment, highly purified and administered in tiny quantities. It has an excellent safety profile.
